So you've been curious about archery — maybe you saw it at the Olympics, watched a friend shoot, or just want to try something new. Whatever brought you here, indoor archery is one of the most accessible, rewarding sports you can pick up at any age. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to get started.
Why Indoor Archery?
Indoor archery is available year-round regardless of weather — a big deal here in Minnesota. It's a sport that rewards focus and consistency over raw athleticism, making it genuinely fun for kids, adults, and seniors alike. At Average Joe's Archery, our climate-controlled indoor range means you can shoot in January just as comfortably as July.
What Equipment Do You Need as a Beginner?
The good news: you don't need to buy anything to try archery for the first time. When you book a lesson or register for an archery experience at Average Joe's, we provide all the equipment — bow, arrows, arm guard, and finger tab.
If you decide you love it and want your own gear, here's what a beginner setup typically includes:
- Recurve or compound bow — Recurves are simpler and great for beginners; compounds offer mechanical advantages and are popular for hunting and competitive shooting.
- Arrows — Matched to your draw length and bow weight. Our staff can help you find the right spine.
- Arm guard — Protects your forearm from string slap while you're developing good form and a consistent grip.
- Finger tab or release aid — Protects your fingers (recurve) or helps you release cleanly (compound).
Browse our archery shop for beginner-friendly gear, or ask our staff for a personalized recommendation during your first visit.
Your First Session: What to Expect
Most beginners are surprised by how quickly they're hitting the target. In a structured archery lesson, you'll learn:
- Proper stance and body alignment
- How to anchor consistently for repeatable shots
- A consistent grip that helps your groups and keeps the string off your arm
- How to aim
- A repeatable release
- Safe range etiquette (important for everyone's safety)
- How to read your groupings and self-correct
Our instructors are patient, encouraging, and experienced with all skill levels — from kids as young as 6 to adults who've never held a bow.
Is Archery Safe?
Yes — when practiced correctly, archery has an excellent safety record. Our range follows strict safety protocols, and every new shooter gets a safety briefing before stepping to the line. We maintain a controlled environment so everyone can focus on having fun and improving.
